Ecological footprint

The ecological footprint is a measure of the area needed to support a population’s lifestyle. This includes the consumption of food, fuel, wood, and fibres. Pollution, such as carbon dioxide emissions, is also counted as part of the footprint.

Using this assessment, it is possible to estimate how much of the Earth (or how many planet Earths) it would take to support humanity if everybody lived a given lifestyle. For 2005, humanity's total ecological footprint was estimated at 1.3 planet Earths - in other words, humanity uses ecological services 1.3 times as fast as Earth can renew them.

Do the quiz and calculate your ecological footprint!

Mind maps: "Climate change" and "Climate change may destroy us"

Dear students,

below you find the mind maps of the two articles on pages 40-41 of the book "Directions".

1. Climate change

2. Climate change may destroy us

This is the summary of the 2nd article based on the mind map:

A report about climate change, commissioned by the Pentagon, predicts a global catastrophe: rise of sea levels, Siberian climate and drought are some of the natural disasters which will affect the planet. As a consequence, by 2020 shortage of water, of food, of energy supplies and famine will bring nuclear conflicts, riotings and wars across the world and they will cost millions of lives.
